Ahead of the 4th Annual Monitoring Committee of the Cohesion Policy Programme “THALIA 2021–2027,” held on 28/11/2025, representatives of the European Commission [Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion (DG EMPL) and Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy (DG REGIO)] carried out on-site visits to co-funded projects of the Programme in Cyprus.
On 27/11/2025, the representatives of the European Commission, accompanied by officials from Directorate-General Growth and the University of Cyprus, visited two co-funded projects at the University of Cyprus.
The first project related to the University of Cyprus Faculty of Engineering Research Laboratories, of a total budget of €44 million. The representatives of the European Commission had the opportunity to see up close the Faculty’s state-of-the-art building facilities, that provide students and researchers with a modern, sustainable, and energy-efficient environment for learning, research, and innovation. It is noted that the construction of the Faculty of Engineering’s research laboratories was co-funded by Cohesion Policy funds in two phases. Phase A was co-funded by the EU under the 2014–2020 Cohesion Policy Programmes, while Phase B was co-funded under the Cohesion Policy Programme “THALIA 2021–2027.”
The second project concerned the Operation of Strategic Importance “Green and Smart Energy Management at the University of Cyprus”. With a total budget of €8.1 million, this project forms part of the strategic plan to transform the University Campus into a sustainable and smart city. More specifically, they visited “Apollon Photovoltaic Park”, featuring a 5 MW photovoltaic installation and a 3.3 MWh energy storage system.
