Short Description/Objective
The project involves the construction of two hardfill Dams, Kammitis and Archangelos with storage capacities of 1,000,000 m³ and 250,000 m³ respectively. As part of the project, approximately 13 km of cast iron pipelines will also be installed.
The project’s primary objective is to provide flood protection in the areas of Aradippou and Livadia by capturing floodwaters in the two Dams.
The Dams are constructed on the Kammitis and Archangelos streams, the two tributaries of the Aradippou River. The pipeline system, of an approximateley lenght of 13 km, is comprised of cast iron pipelines ranging from 600 to 400 mm in diameter and its purpose is to:
- divert water from Archangelos to Kammitis when capacity allows, and
- transfer water from Kammitis Dam either to the Aradippou land consolidation area or to the Southern Conveyor network.
The Dams will retain floodwaters to protect downstream areas and are designed to store up to 500,000 m³ of water to convert part of the irrigation needs in the Aradippou land consolidation area.
Expected Benefits/Outcomes
The dual-purpose use of the Dams is expected to have positive economic impacts on the area. The flood control function will proactively protect downstream areas and prevent potential major material damages to properties and infrastructure. The use of Dam water for irrigation will contribute to the agricultural development of the area, which has long been seeking water sources to meet the needs of the Aradippou land consolidation area.
