Short Description/Objective

The project relates to the construction of a water transport pipeline from Dhekelia Desalination Plant to Kokkinokremos reservoir area and aims to meet the water needs and improve the reliability of the potable water supply system at Famagusta free area (Paralimni – Deryneia Municipality and Ayia Napa Municipality), as well as in the Communities of Xylophagou and Ormideia of Larnaca District.

It involves the construction of a new cast iron water pipeline with a diameter of 900 mm and a total length of 25.3 km, which will be fed by two existing tanks within Dhekelia Desalination Plant, with a capacity of 5,000 m3 and 2,500 m3 respectively, to Kokkinokremos reservoir area, the construction of five Glass Lined Steel (GLS) tanks with a total capacity of 35,000 m3 in Kokkinokremmos reservoir area and the construction of a new pump station within the Dhekelia Desalination Plant area.

This project is of the utmost importance, as the existing Khirokitia – Famagusta water transport pipeline in the area is more than 50 years old and capacity to store water in the existing tanks is only sufficient for 2 hours during peak tourist season.

Expected Benefits/Outcomes

The main benefit of the project is to improve water supply security at Famagusta free area, by creating an alternative source of water supply which is independent of the existing infrastructure, as well as increase water storage capacity for a period of 48 hours in the peak tourist season.

The implementation of the project will also enable the upgrading/replacement of the existing old pipeline.
