Short Description/Objective

The Municipality of Nicosia, aiming to make Nicosia a smart sustainable city and a capital of innovation, adopted an integrated smart city plan.

The Project: “Smart City” of the Municipality of Nicosia includes the creation of infrastructure for the development of various smart systems from which both the Municipality and the citizens can benefit. The project includes, among others, the following:

• Installation of Optical Fiber Network (Nicosia Fiber Network – NFN)
• Installation of Wireless Network (Wi-Fi) (Nicosia Wireless Network – NWN)
• Citizen monitoring and information system concerning the availability of parking spaces (Smart Parking)
• Monitoring system for sustainable mobility parameters and dynamic information of interested parties (Smart Urban Mobility)
• Counterfeit lighting unit monitoring system (Smart Lighting)
• System for monitoring environmental parameters (Environmental Sensor)
• System for monitoring the filling of waste bins
• Information system for citizens and visitors through Info- Points and Digital Signage
• Smart City Central Management System

  All the information gathered by the above smart systems is collected and evaluated at the Smart City Command & Control Centre, with the aim of timely mobilization and optimization of services.

Expected Benefits/Outcomes

The expected benefits from the implementation of the Project are many and have a multifaceted impact on the daily life of citizens, entrepreneurship, the environment and the sustainable development of the Municipality. The project, amongst others, is expected to:

• Improve the quality of life, including among others, the smart improvement and development of services provided by the Municipality
• Contribute to the effective management of intervention areas and monitor the results of individual urban development interventions
• Strengthen the quality and usability of urban municipal infrastructures
• Create and implement innovative solutions to developmental, environmental or social challenges faced by the city
• Promote Nicosia as a model centre for the promotion of innovative entrepreneurship in the South-East Mediterranean
• Create a pioneering market for innovative applications with the scope of the “Smart City” of Nicosia
• Promote multimodal transport systems, through the improvement of the public transport network, the strengthening of networking between individual transporters and the reduction of individual motorized transport (a goal also specified in the context of the Integrated Mobility Plan for Nicosia)
• Minimize the negative side effects of living in a densely populated urban environment, such as environmental pollution, stress-related illnesses or a sense of threat to personal safety.
