Short Description/Objective
The project is addressed to local authorities with mass waste generating sites on their coastal front in Limassol and Paphos Districts.
The overall objective of the project is to promote separate collection systems in waste paper/paper packaging, metal and plastic packaging, as well as organic waste, by large producers.
The project is implemented in cooperation with the local authorities, while ensuring the compliance of the Republic of Cyprus with EU and national legislation on municipal solid waste management.
The project subsidises costs such as the supply and installation of equipment to beneficiaries for the rational management of municipal solid municipal waste generated by coastal hotels and related waste-producing sites, such as restaurants, cafes, hospitals, organisations, institutions, etc.
The equipment relates, amongst others, to the following:
- Refuse collection vehicles for the collection and transport of organic waste
- Compressors and small presses for compacting paper packaging
- Submersible bins for PMD, glass and paper waste
- Skip bins for pruning
- Pruning shredders
- Bins for organic waste
- Vehicles of various types for the collection and transport of separately collected waste.
Expected Benefits/Outcomes
The project is expected to contribute to the national waste management targets set in accordance with Directive 2018/851/EC.
The implementation of the project promotes appropriate waste management with particular emphasis on the reduction, source separation and separate collection of municipal solid waste and the recycling/ processing of paper, PMD, glass and organic waste.
It also raises awareness among owners and workers in sites of mass waste generation on waste management and environmental protection issues and enhances their understanding on separate sorting and the types of waste that can be recycled.
