Short Description/Objective

The Centre aims to provide early intervention and support services to children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) nationwide. The goal is to provide early intervention and support for both the child and the family to mitigate the symptoms of autism and develop maximum autonomy while maintaining family cohesion, unity and harmony. The Centre operates in a multidisciplinary manner and offers an individualised approach. A description of the objectives of each Service is given below:

Α) Psychological Support Service: Psycho-emotional support for parents and other family members aiming to maintain family peace and cohesion, quality of life, prevent marital or other crises and empower parents. It is provided by Registered Psychologists at the Centre’s offices and other locations in various districts.

B) Home Training Service: Training of the child in activities of daily living to develop skills and regulate behaviour for better integration in the school setting, along with the training of parents/caregivers in offering care, education and occupation opportunities to the child. It is provided in the home and/or in other appropriate settings, using international specialised and specifically targeted scientific tools.

C) Social Support Service: Provision of social services for information and support to the family as well as establishing contacts between the family and all relevant services/organisations. It is provided by Social Workers of the Contracting Authority, employed on a fixed-term basis in the framework of the Project.

The Project was approved by the decision of the Council of Ministers dated 6/5/2019. The Centre, which opened in October 2021, is housed in renovated premises at the building complex of the Christos Stelios Ioannou Foundation in Strovolos.

Expected Benefits/Outcomes

A) Early education for the child and support for the family, appropriate education within a family-centred multidisciplinary intervention model and optimal integration of the child into the community to reduce social exclusion, isolation or marginalisation for both the child and the family.

B) Deepen and develop knowledge on ASD in Cyprus through the expertise acquired within the Centre and its cooperation with a foreign model organisation (Child Development Center – Maccabi Health Services – Israel).

C) Broader indirect information, awareness and education of the public, and in particular the relevant professional bodies, through the Home Training Service which is also provided in various settings together with other professionals for the better integration of the child at community and school level.

D) Reduce or minimise the impact of ASD on the children’s life course with a better prognosis for their development and the long-term reduction in social and other implications. This is expected to result in a corresponding reduction in dependence on social benefits and allowances.
