On Monday, 24 February 2025, press officers attended a guided tour at the construction site of the co-funded project “Redevelopment of the Old GSP Stadium into a Green and Recreational Area” in the presence of the Deputy Director General of Directorate General Growth (DGG) of the Ministry of Finance, Ms. Penelope Papavassiliou, the Mayor of Nicosia, Mr. Charalambos Prountzos, and officers from DGG and the Municipality of Nicosia.
The project “Redevelopment of the Old GSP Stadium into a Green and Recreational Area”, of a budget of approximately €27 million, is implemented under the Cohesion Policy Programme “THALIA 2021-2027” with co-funding from the EU. The project began in late 2021 and is expected to be delivered by March 2025, offering both residents and visitors of Nicosia an essential green and recreational space.
The project is located in the central business district of Nicosia and transforms the site of the old GSP stadium into a park surrounded by greenery, ensuring easy access for citizens. The project’s design concept alludes to the shape of the old stadium, with the creation of stadium-style stands whose roofs are covered with greenery. The plan also includes the construction of an outdoor amphitheater with over 700 seats, a multipurpose hall, cafes and other shops, two underground car parks with a capacity of over 500 spaces, electric car charging stations, and installation works for connection to the public bus network. The site will also house a Citizen Service Centre (KEP). It should be noted that the old iconic clock dating back to the Old GSP site has been restored and placed in a prominent position.
In a statement, the Deputy Director General of DGG said that the implementation of Cohesion Policy Programmes has, over time, brought significant benefits to the Cypriot economy, actively contributing to the creation of iconic development projects that improve quality of life for citizens. One such project is the “Redevelopment of the Old GSP Stadium into a Green and Recreational Area”, implemented under the current Cohesion Policy Programme “THALIA 2021-2027” with co-funding from the EU.
