June 2, 2026

Today, 02/06/2026, the Municipality of Nicosia officially inaugurated the co-funded project “Regeneration of the Creative Industries District Area – Phase A1”, a major urban revitalization initiative for the historic centre of the capital.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Minister of Interior, Mr Konstantinos Ioannou, and Ms Themis Christophidou, Director-General of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy (DG REGIO), both of whom delivered addresses. Also present were the Minister of Finance, Mr Makis Keravnos, Members of Parliament, representatives of the Government, the European Union and public services, representatives of local government, as well as residents and business owners from the area.

In his address, the Mayor of Nicosia, Mr Charalambos Prountzos, emphasized that the project is “living proof that when there is vision, planning and cooperation, our city can move forward while respecting its history and looking towards the future.” He added that Nicosia “is entering a new era – greener, more sustainable, more people-centred and more inclusive,” stressing that the redevelopment of Trikoupi Street is a key intervention for the revitalisation of the historic city centre.

The project, with a total budget of €5 million, is being implemented under the Cohesion Policy Programme  “THALIA 2021–2027” with co-financing from the European Union. It involves the comprehensive redevelopment of Trikoupi Street, transforming it into the main connecting corridor between the Creative Industries District and the wider city of Nicosia, with the aim of attracting and establishing new creative activities in the city’s previously degraded urban centre.
