Short Description/Objective:

Phase C of Larnaca Sewerage System involves the construction of sewerage collection networks and pumping stations at Dromolania-Meneou, Kiti and Pervolia and the transfer of urban wastewater to the existing urban wastewater treatment plant of Larnaca.

The Project includes, among others, gravity networks with a total length of approximately 181 km, eight (8) central pumping stations and a network of forcemains with a total length of approximately 10.5 km.

It is expected that the Project will contribute to the fulfillment of the compliance requirements of the Republic of Cyprus with the European Directive on the Treatment of Urban Wastewater 91/271/EEC for the aforementioned agglomerations, which fall under the National Implementation Program.

 Implementation Stage:

The Project will be implemented via four Construction Contracts:

Contract C1 – ΣΑΛ 21/2021 (Part of Kiti, Meneou-Dromolaxia and coastal zone): Contract Signing Date: 14/6/2023 – Duration: 40 months.

Contract C2 – ΣΑΛ 2/2022 (Remaining Part of Meneou-Dromolaxia): Contract Signing Date: 15/5/2023 – Duration: 40 months.

Contract C3 – ΣΑΛ 3/2022 (Part of Kiti-Pervolia): Contract Signing Date: 2/6/2023 – Duration: 40 months.

Contract C5 – ΣΑΛ 5/2022 (Pumping Stations): The evaluation process is near completion – Duration: 36 months.

Expected Benefits/Results:

The Project will result in significant positive effects to the study area, as urban wastewater will be managed in a rational and sustainable way, reducing thus the risk of pollution of subsoil and groundwater due to the use of septic tanks. In addition, the construction of central sewerage system will contribute towards the protection of marine ecosystems from the discharge of urban wastewater.

Moreover, the Project is expected to promote the utilization of non-conventional water resources in agriculture, such as treated urban wastewater (reclaimed water), as the central sewerage network that will be constructed in the framework of the Project, will be connected to the existing urban wastewater treatment plant of Larnaca, whose produced reclaimed water is used for agricultural irrigation purposes.
