During his official visit to Cyprus, aimed at highlighting the added value of the EU budget and the positive impact of EU-funded across Member States and Europe as a whole, the European Commissioner for Budget, Anti-Fraud and Public Administration, Mr. Piotr Serafin, visited development projects implemented with EU co-funding under the Cohesion Policy Programme “THALIA2021-2027.”
On Thursday, 04/09/2025, Mr. Serafin toured the capital’s historic centre. He visited the “Smart City” Command and Control Centre project and the new facilities of the restorated Old Municipal Market – now housing part of the activities of the CYENS Research and Innovation Centre – as well as the “Redevelopment of the Creative Business District Area” project.
On Friday, 05/09/2025, the Commissioner visited the University of Cyprus, where he toured the state-of-the-art “Stelios Ioannou” Library, the Photovoltaic Park, and the Faculty of Engineering Research Laboratories. He also engaged in discussion with students on the EU’s contribution to improving modern daily life and how European funding creates tangible opportunities for citizens and young people in particular.
It is noted that the current Cohesion Policy Programme “THALIA2021-2027” has a budget of €1.8 billion, of which €969 million is EU’s contribution and the remaining €842 million comes from the national budget. “THALΙA2021-2027” represents the largest EU funding allocation ever granted to Cyprus. The Programme is currently in full implementation, with approximately €700 million already committed and more than 100 projects either underway or completed.
