Press Conference of the Project “Upgrading Public Transport Infrastructure Across Cyprus”

A press conference was held on 20/06/2024, at the facilities of AirControl Ltd, in the presence of the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Mr. Alexis Vafeadis, on the occasion of the launch of the implementation of the project “Upgrading Public Transport Infrastructure Across Cyprus”. The project aims for a coordinated upgrade of public transport infrastructure, creating a comfortable, safe and accessible environment for passengers waiting for the bus. Additionally, the project is expected to increase bus usage and, consequently, improve road safety, alleviate traffic problems, and support vulnerable groups and rural areas. 

During the presentation of the project, the characteristics of the new infrastructures were showcased, which take into consideration local conditions and available space in the road network, achieving uniformity, accessibility for use by people with disabilities, as well as safety and protection from weather conditions. The new infrastructures makes use of renewable energy sources, are expandable to meet future usage needs, and feature lighting and electronic signs with audio announcements of bus arrivals. They also have high-quality material specifications to ensure their durability over time.

At this stage, the standard samples of stops and shelters are being finalized, which were presented to the attendees. Furthermore, preparations for mass production are being completed and are scheduled to start in July 2024. According to the planned schedule, approximately 300 new stops and shelters will be installed by 2024 while another 100 existing shelters will be repaired. The installation works for the new stops and shelters will be carried out simultaneously in all cities with priority given to stops located on main axes as well as stops with high passenger traffic and transfer points.

The project has a total budget of €74 million and is being implemented within the framework of the Cohesion Policy Programme “THALEIA2021-2027” co-funded by the EU.
