On 20 June 2024, a press conference was held at the premises of AirControl Ltd, in the presence of the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Mr. Alexis Vafeades, on the occasion of the launch of the project “Upgrading Public Transport Infrastructure Across Cyprus”. The project aims to upgrade public transport infrastructure in a coordinated manner, by creating a comfortable, safe and accessible environment for passengers waiting for the bus. It is also expected to increase bus usage and therefore improve road safety, alleviate traffic problems and support vulnerable groups and rural areas. 

During the presentation of the project, the characteristics of the new infrastructures were showcased. These take into consideration local conditions and available space on the road network, ensuring uniformity, accessibility for people with disabilities, as well as safety and protection from weather conditions. The new infrastructures utilise renewable energy sources, are expandable to meet future usage requirements and feature lighting and electronic signs with audio announcements for bus arrivals. They also come with high-quality material specifications to ensure their durability over time.

Τhe standard samples of stops and shelters, as presented to the attendees, are currently being finalised. Preparations are also under way for mass production, which is scheduled to begin in July 2024. According to the planned schedule, approximately 300 new stops and shelters will be installed by 2024, while another 100 existing shelters will be repaired. The installation works for the new stops and shelters will be carried out simultaneously in all cities, with priority given to stops located on main axes as well as stops with high passenger volumes and transfer points.

The project has a total budget of €74 million and is being implemented within the framework of the Cohesion Policy Programme “THALIA 2021-2027”, which is co-funded by the EU.
