Short Description/Objective

The project concerns the restoration of the Municipal Market Building of the old Town Hall of Nicosia, which is located in the centre within the city walls, next to the green zone.  The building will host operations of the Centre of Excellence in Research and Innovation CYENS, labs, spaces for demonstration activities, shared workspaces, seminar room, multimedia studio, fabrication lab, space for electronic templates, etc.

CYENS is already operating at the historical centre of the town, in the renovated building (former STOA) at the Town Hall Square, as an Entrepreneurship and Innovation Hub where more than 100 people are accommodated.

The building of the Municipal Market and the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Hub will constitute the pillar of the project “Creative Business District” which is already in progress. It is expected to give a push to the development of a competitive and extroverted knowledge economy, as well as to the promotion of the wider region of the capital city, as a regional hub of creativity, technological progress and business innovation, with benefits that will be extended across Cyprus.

Expected Benefits/Outcomes

The maintenance and restoration work of the building will bring multiple benefits, as follows:

• Strengthening and supporting networks to promote business innovation and creative industry, including Centre of Excellence activities
• Creating new jobs
• Regeneration of the area and increase of visitors
• Upgrading the wider urban environment
• Creating synergies with other related projects.
