Description/Objective
The project is located in the central business district of Nicosia and has as its primary objective the transformation of the old GSP Stadium site into a green area (park) in the heart of the city, easily accessible to citizens.
Apart from the park, the project includes an open-air amphitheatre, a multipurpose hall, cafés and other shops, as well as two underground parking levels connected to the public bus network.
The design concept of the project draws inspiration from the form of the old stadium, with the creation of structures in the shape of stands, whose roofs have been covered with greenery. Furthermore, the old GSP clock has been preserved and placed in the square to serve as a reminder of the site’s history.
Progress/Implementation Stage
The project has been completed. Its inauguration ceremony took place on 14/06/2025, organized by the Municipality of Nicosia, in the presence of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, the European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Mr. Costas Kadis, the Mayor of Nicosia, Mr. Charalambos Prountzos, other officials and a large number of citizens. It is noted that, during the inauguration ceremony, the Executive Vice-President for Cohesion and Reforms of the EU, Mr. Rafaelle Fitto, sent a recorded message.
Various social, cultural, recreational, and artistic events/activities are now taking place at the project site, as it offers a new sustainable, accessible, and functional green and leisure space, fostering culture and social cohesion while enhancing the urban life of citizens.
Expected Benefits/Outcomes
The project contributes to the upgrading of the urban environment by providing an important green and recreational space for the residents of Nicosia and its visitors, while at the same time promoting sustainable urban mobility through the “Park & Ride” service. In parallel, the project connects and unifies existing redevelopments in the area, enabling citizens to seamlessly enjoy the entire city centre of Nicosia.
