Protection and Conservation of the Natural Environment and Biodoversity
The Project that will fund the main actions of the Sustainable Development Project (SDP) of the National Forest Park (NFP) of Akamas, aims at the protection, conservation and development of NFP through rehabilitation actions of deprived areas, conservation of fauna and flora species and creation of infrastructures.
Specifically, two actions will be funded totally amounted to €16.5 mil. which constitute the base for the achievement of the objectives of SDP of NFP as below:
Action 1: “Improvement of a part of the Main Transportation Network of the National Forest Park of Akamas – Phase A”
The Project constitutes the first Phase of improvement of the existing roads of the main transportation network of Akamas NFP, in which the roads below are included:
(A) Aspros Potamos-Toxeftra-Lara, total length 6.6 km, which starts from the region of Aspros Potamos in the Municipality of Pegeia and ends to the region of Lara at Inia Community
(B) Circular route of Lara, total length 2.7 km, which will connect circularly the infrastructures of NFP in the region of Lara and in which the transportation will be carried out with NFP vehicles only, and
(C) Toxeftra- Avakas- Lipati, total length 4.1 km, which leads to the Avakas Gorge and Pano Arodes Community.
The visitors’ movements across the NFP through the improved road network will be safer and the visitors will be directed to specific routes through which they will approach safely the points of interest as well as the Infrastructure Management Nodes which will be constructed (Action 2).
At the same time, along with the improvement of a part of the existing main road network, the entrance will be blocked for the illegal roads of a length of more than 100 km, so as to be reduced to a minimum the degradation of Akamas ecosystems from the dust.
Action 2: “Construction of Infrastructure Management Nodes of NFP”
In the framework of this Action, the construction of Infrastructure Management Nodes is foreseen, according to the designs of the winning architectural proposal. Via the Infrastructure Nodes, thousands of visitors will be informed qualitative, they will be resting points, while they will contribute significantly to the planning of visits, the protection of incompatible human activities and they will eliminate significantly the pressures activated by the sensitive ecosystems. Some of the Nodes will constitute the entrances and the exits of the NFP.
