On 4 and 5 June 2026, within the framework of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU 2026, the proceedings, and accompanying events of the Informal Meeting of Ministers responsible for Cohesion Policy took place in Nicosia.
On Thursday, 4 June 2026, the Mayor, Mr. Charalambos Prountzos, welcomed the Ministers to Nicosia City Hall, where they had the opportunity to enjoy a panoramic view of the city. They then visited the Old Municipal Market of Nicosia, which was restored with the support of Cohesion Policy and now houses the CYENS Centre of Excellence. A social event of the Meeting was held at the venue, during which participants had the opportunity to watch a video showcasing Cohesion Policy projects, and learn about the results of Cohesion Policy investments in research, innovation, and development, as well as innovative applications and projects being developed at the CYENS Centre of Excellence.
On Friday, 5 June 2026, the main proceedings of the Meeting were held at the “Filoxenia” Conference Centre in Nicosia. The Ministers exchanged views on the role of Cohesion Policy in providing the necessary incentives, development prospects, and employment opportunities that enable European citizens to remain, prosper, and build their future in their home regions. They also discussed the specific challenges faced by island regions and how these can be addressed through European policies, particularly Cohesion Policy, in light of the forthcoming EU Strategy for Islands.
